Essay:

Crimson banners fluttered wildly as the wind whipped through the town square, where hundreds had already assembled. The scent of roasted chestnuts mingled with the sharp tang of anticipation. Children darted between legs, their laughter momentarily piercing the low hum of anxious conversations. A sudden burst of drums silenced the crowd, all eyes turning toward the makeshift stage at the center.

Maria stood on tiptoe, straining to catch a glimpse over the sea of heads. “Can you see him?” she whispered to her brother, clutching his arm. Before he could respond, a hush fell. The mayor stepped forward, his somber expression illuminated by the flickering torches. “Friends,” he began, his voice heavy, “tonight we stand together not just as neighbors, but as a family united.”
