Free Book! (For underprivileged students)

Victor Tan

Recently, some of you asked me about the method of distribution that I’ve chosen for my first book. Expressing your concern, you have come up to me and said:

“Do you control your work from being accessed?”

The answer is no.

“Aren’t you worried that people will pirate it?”

The answer is no.

“People have been sharing your book around recently… Aren’t you afraid?”

…Well, maybe I would be, if you forwarded the book itself to the entire universe! 😂

In fact, if you need the book because you’re underprivileged or poor or unable to pay for the book…

Just fill in this form 🙂

Please fill in this form and I will send the book to you.

Some people proceeded to ask… Aren’t you afraid that people will just pirate the book and send it out to the world?

Honestly, this has been a year of firsts and I never imagined that I would ever be in this position…

But no, I’m not afraid.

Here’s why.

I think that people have a natural instinct to share good things, and that piracy is inevitable. As a creator, it is my first time facing this prospect, yet at the same time though, I think that good works will be rewarded eventually.

…Does that sound naive?

I think that sounds a bit naive, so let me explain my thought process.

If someone pirated the book, I guess that there are three reasons why this could have happened.

The way I see it, if you did choose to pirate the book, there are then three possibilities as to why you might have chosen to do so.

  1. Somebody sent the book to you because they thought that it was just that good.

You may have been thinking: Is this resource for real? Is this person legitimate and can we trust him? Can so much value really be offered in a single webpage? Why are there are hundreds of people visiting it simply within two weeks of its creation and why are people discussing it all over my groups?

Can the book be that good? I need to check I need to check I need to check!!!

See:

See: Artist visualization, lol.

Upon realising its value, you may then have chosen to utilise it on a day-to-day basis, perhaps unconsciously, choosing to use it while forgetting where it has come from.

If that is the case, then I am incredibly satisfied as it looks like I delivered something great! That is exactly the outcome that I intended to achieve, and I am tremendously happy that I have been successful in achieving it.

If you are financially able and you see value in supporting my mission, all I ask is that you will decide to procure it for yourself if you identify with the basic message that I am communicating across and you see it as valuable for me to be able to deliver that message in days ahead. You will be contributing to wards the advancement of this subject and the understanding of many students in the days ahead, and I look forward to meeting you!

If you identify with the basic message and would like to support me as a creator, consider buying the book and fueling the journey forward!

That now brings us to the second possible reason as to why it is that you might choose to pirate:

2. You are in a situation of financial need.

I acknowledge that this is a possibility – there are many people around the world who are both incredibly deserving, while at the same time lacking in the opportunities that put so to elevate them to the next level, and I am always conscious of that because I was one of those people as well.

It’s difficult, isn’t it? You find yourself in a situation where you wish to do the right thing, but somehow or another circumstances, do not allow you to do that, and no amount of reasoning or thinking, is going to resolve that problem immediately.

If that is you and you are poor and incapable of paying, then I want to tell you this: once againyou are in the right place, and if you deeply believe in the transformative power of education, and are looking for the evidence that it may change your life, then all you need to do is think about the person who is saying these words to you now (more on this later!)

If you are indeed in a situation of financial need and you find yourself unable or incapable of purchasing the book without a dire sacrifice to yourself because of familial circumstances or otherwise, you have no need to pirate: simply go up to me and speak with me, and I will send you the book myself. There is no need for you to sacrifice your conscience for some thing as petty as this, and I am happy to send you the book if you feel that it is going to meaningfully benefit you.

If somehow still you are unable to reach me or you feel embarrassed, knows that I do not feel any anger towards you for that and I understand why you did what you did in the situation that you did it: please do what you need to do and go in peace, though I hope you will remember me when you grow older or have a better situation for yourself.

3. You are not in a situation of financial need, but you think “that is a good resource, and I would like to use it without paying for it”.

I think that that is possible.

Whether we like it or not, there are people in this world who sense of ethics does not necessarily accord with those that reflect our own personal sensibilities – is the solution then to simply assume that the entire world is evil? I guess not.

Yet, I think it is also rather unlikely.

While certainly it is possible, that is not what the evidence has told me so far.

The evidence has shown you that those of you who have made the purchase are conscientious, willing to step up, and unwilling to do wrong – even if there are some amongst you who have made the conscious choice to use the book without actually paying for it, the support that I have received from the community at large has been extensive to the point that I have yet to notice, and that even if there are bad elements in our community who have chosen to use this be sauce without paying for it, I can confidently and comfortably ignore that sort of behaviour and instead choose to cherish the abundant good that all of you have chosen to show me in your choices to engage and also to make use of the knowledge that is contained within it.

Thank you!

Thank you for your overwhelming support and your voices of concern.

Thank you for caring about me and for the message that I am sending out – that it is valuable for people to learn how to use English in the best of ways, and to make use of it.

For your concern, I am thankful.

For the ways that you reached out and tell me about the things that you have seen fit to point out, I am abundantly grateful.

It is for this reason and for many more that I have no particular of your of piracy and instead repost in a deep confidence that if you are going to use this resource that you will pay for it fairly and in turn will meet me upon the ground where we are supposed to meet and can therefore engage in the most meaningful of ways as we move on a journey to work is your highest fulfilment.

At the end of the day, the reason that I do this is not primarily for the money. Rather, it is for the sake of trying to create something that is actually beneficial to society because I know that at an earlier time of my life, I would have appreciated something like this as well.

Once again, thank you, and I look forward to seeing you in the members’ section!

The Power of Intelligent Practice

Victor Tan

I doubt that you are lazy, otherwise you wouldn’t be reading this.

Come on. Even if your parents forced you to be here, or if you are a parent and you really don’t want to be here, there is a part of you that understands very clearly that there is something lacking about what you are doing and you want to improve it.

However, that does not mean that you are good at practice.

In fact, chances are you are here after having done past year paper after past year paper or written exam script after exam script, only to realize that your scores are not improving.

To that I say, well…

Not all practice is created equal.

Practicing to get better at first language English is not a matter of just doing essays over and over again.

It is also about spending that time isolating the specific things that would help you get better and then actually training those things.

Let’s now talk about how to practice intelligently.

All of these were just suggestions on how you can get better at practicing, but do not think of them as dogma. Each of you readers has a different mind and a different approach to things, and at the end of the day, whatever practice method you choose has to work for you specifically. However, I think that some things here remain absolutely true:

In order for you to get a sense of how to improve, you first have to know where you stand, and you do need to know where you want to go.

Beyond that, a lot of things are negotiable, and how and whether you improve are up to you – What’s for sure, though, is that intentionally choosing to look for better methods and seeking out intelligent ways of improving in a way that suits you will far outperform just blindly going into the preparation process hoping and praying that writing a few essays is going to magically make you into one of the greatest writers on the planet.

With that in mind, do you have a strategy or do you have a plan in mind for improving your writing this year and leading up to the exams? Let me know down in the comments!

It’s Never Too Late to Start Preparing for IGCSE English 0500

Victor Tan

Are you worried about preparing for your IGCSE English 0500 exams because you feel like you don’t have the background or haven’t spent much time reading in the past?

Since you are here, I guess that that’s the case – but since you are here, I also guess that you are tremendously motivated and you want to change.

I’m here to tell you that it’s never too late to start, and with some dedication and hard work, you can definitely improve and achieve success – but I’m also going to give it to you straight: it is not going to be easy.

That is not because you necessarily lack the talent or the ability – it is because this subject is difficult for everyone.

It requires students to be able to think on a higher level and learn how to express themselves effectively in many different types of situations and also to be able to understand text pipes; there is no doubt that students who spend more time reading are going to have an advantage, but it also requires specific practice to make some of these things happen in a world without good resources… Until now.

In this blog post, I’ll address some common concerns and provide tips on how to prepare for the IGCSE English 0500 exams…Even if you’re starting from scratch.

  1. “I haven’t spent much time reading. Can I still do well?”

The answer is yes! While reading is an essential part of building your language skills, it’s never too late to start. The key is to develop a reading habit now.

Begin by reading books, articles, and newspapers that interest you. This is crucial, and it will set you up for success in many other areas beyond performance on this exam. Set aside a specific time each day to read, and make it a non-negotiable part of your routine. As you read, take note of new vocabulary, sentence structures, and writing styles. This will help improve your comprehension and language skills, which are crucial for the IGCSE English 0500 exam.

  1. “How can I improve my writing?”

Writing is an essential component of the IGCSE English 0500 exam, so it’s important to practice regularly.

Start by writing short paragraphs or essays on various topics, and ask a teacher, parent, or friend to review your work and provide feedback. As you receive feedback, focus on improving your grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure.

Remember, practice makes perfect, and even if you don’t feel like you are improving, I assure you that the small movements that you make as you move forward are going to train you in the general direction of becoming a better writer minute by minute and moment by moment.

Even if you just practice 10 minutes a day, make sure that the practice that you are doing is consistent, and that it is helping you to direct your mind in the general direction of making small changes that you can implement on a day to day basis; even if you only have several months, you will be shocked what you can do if you have specific practice and an intense will to improve.

  1. “I’m not a native English speaker. Can I still succeed in the exam?”

Absolutely! The IGCSE English 0500 exam is designed for both native and non-native speakers. If you’re not a native speaker, you may need to put in some extra effort to build your vocabulary and improve your language skills.

In addition to reading and writing practice, try engaging in conversations with native speakers or watching English-language movies and TV shows to improve your listening and speaking skills.

  1. “How should I prepare for the exam?”

Here are some tips to help you prepare:

  • Review the syllabus and understand the exam format: Familiarize yourself with the content and structure of the IGCSE English 0500 exam. Understand all the mark schemes inside out. Internalize them. Become completely clear about what is being assessed, what excellence looks like, and be willing to learn every day. This will help you know what to expect and make your preparation more focused. Honestly, from my experience, a lot of people don’t know about the exam format even if they attend some pretty good schools. Just by understanding the format, you are going to have a leg up in knowing what to look for and how to do well.
  • Create a study plan: Allocate specific times for studying and stick to the schedule. Make sure you balance reading, writing, listening, and speaking practice.
  • Seek help from teachers or tutors: If you’re struggling with certain concepts or need guidance, don’t hesitate to ask for help. Teachers and tutors can provide valuable feedback and support.
  • Practice past exam papers: Working through past exam papers can help familiarize you with the question types and give you a sense of how to manage your time during the exam. In fact, knowing how to deal with the exam is one of the most important things that you can do – understanding the format of the exam is crucial, but so is getting actual experience with the paper. You cannot, and you must not avoid this – you must face the challenge head on.
  1. “How do I stay motivated?”

Staying motivated can be challenging, especially when preparing for an exam like the IGCSE English 0500 and if you feel for whatever reason like you are behind, maybe because you don’t speak English at home or maybe because you feel that your proficiency isn’t great – remember in those moments that everyone who started out in the world without any mastery of English at all, and just think of yourself, starting a little bit later, compared to some other people; think about it – your mind can change and grow over the course of time – why should you feel like just because you are behind right now that you will stay like that forever?

Some people, frankly, give up – they tell themselves that science, subjects or mathematics are likely to be more important, and therefore they end up losing interest in English class – or so they say – and they just call the grapes sour because they aren’t willing to put in the effort to get them; the problem with this is that effective communication is going to be important throughout the course of their lives, and by losing confidence in the things that they cannot do, they push themselves into self fulfilling prophecies.

I acknowledge that it is difficult, believe me that I know – but I want to challenge you to do better than that.

This is a crucial opportunity to improve oneself by stepping up to the challenge and dealing with it as it comes, because that trains you to have that desire and desperation to know how to communicate effectively, no matter what the circumstances.

I want to challenge you to stand up for yourself, and for your ability to improve right now, even if you think to yourself that you have never improved before – miracles do not happen overnight, but you are likely underestimate what you are able to do.

And since you’re here, since you’re reading this, I know you can.

I know that you are here because you want to stand up to the challenge, and I am responding to the desire inside you to become better, to set it on fire and help you to get to where you want to go.

I’m here to affirm your CHOICE to get better, and to conquer this exam.

Remember your end goal and envision yourself succeeding in the exam.

Break down your study plan into smaller, manageable tasks and celebrate your progress along the way, and ask for help if you need it, either from me or the teachers on this site, or the people around you who are supporting you in your growth and journey.

Stay positive, and don’t forget to take breaks and maintain a healthy balance between studying and leisure activities.

In conclusion, it’s never too late to start preparing for the IGCSE English 0500 exam.

With dedication, hard work, and the right approach, you can overcome any obstacles and achieve success. Believe in yourself, and remember that every step you take brings you closer to your goal. Happy studying!
