It’s always wonderful when the people who are under your care manage to accomplish great feats that are both unlikely and also wonderful.

For many reasons, I am fortunate to be confronted with this on a day-to-day basis and today, I was very lucky to see this happen amongst one of my students in my live online classes, with hopefully many more to come in the future as well for the October/November 2023 IGCSE First Language English exams once again.

Even as I write this, I’m conscious that I cannot be entirely responsible for this incredible outcome, as I think that the success of any person is the result of a complex of different factors.

Even those of you out there who have access to the different resources on this page and otherwise will probably succeed through your efforts and I can only claim responsibility for an incidental part of your successes.

Still, it was wonderful to see one of the students in my life class, and with whom I’d worked assiduously, become able to accomplish such success and in such an overwhelming way along the way; it was something I was very happy to see, and while the work is its own reward, I am like any other person a human with my own emotions, my own joys, my own gratitude to people for pushing themselves to go beyond the boundaries.

Welcome back, friends! January’s two thirds over (can you believe it???), and I’m starting to notice how much of our language is built around control—or the illusion of it. We “seize the day,” “take charge,” “make things happen.” English loves this fantasy of agency, as if willpower alone could bend […]

Welcome back, friends! A week into the new year, and I’m already acutely aware that time is passing; I’ve already noticed something odd about how we talk about waiting. We say we “kill time,” as if time were the enemy and we were doing violence to it. But waiting isn’t […]
