Welcome back, all! English has a wonderful paradox tucked inside it: the phrase “a deafening silence”. Silence is the absence of sound, and yet we describe it as if it could be loud enough to hurt. That’s because we never really experience silence on its own — we only notice it as the sudden absence of a noise we had stopped hearing. Silence is defined entirely by what it interrupts.

That’s the secret to writing it well. You cannot describe quiet directly; you describe the sounds that stop, and the tiny sounds that grow brave in the gap — a dripping tap, a ticking clock, your own heartbeat. Silence, in good prose, is loud precisely because it is surrounded by things that have just fallen still.

This week’s essay prompt: “Write a story that includes the words ‘… everything went quiet …’.” — Question 4 from the October/November 2025 Paper 2 series.

Here’s the craft challenge: the required words mark a moment of rupture — the instant before or after something terrible or decisive. Weak responses bury the phrase in the middle of ordinary action. The strongest ones make that sudden quiet the pivot of the whole opening, and start in medias res, dropping us straight into the crisis.

A sophisticated writer will let the theme of sound and silence run all the way through — the quiet that rushes in at the start returning, transformed, at the very end. That kind of patterning turns a required phrase into the emotional spine of the piece.
